    Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, Majunga

By the grace and power of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercessions of our protector and patron Saint Nicholas, and with the love and support of our people, the Cathedral of our Missionary Diocese is moving steadily towards completion. Today the chandeliers were installed, giving special splendour and majesty to the holy space.

In the coming days the other necessary church items will be installed, such as the chanters’ stands, the episcopal throne, the oil lamps and the necessary sound equipment, which have already been ordered and received. So, step by step, our Cathedral is taking its final form, to become a jewel of faith and a spiritual point of reference for our whole local Church.

We express from our hearts our thanks to all the benefactors, donors and co-workers who contribute to the progress of this great work, which is being carried out to the glory of God and for the spiritual benefit of our blessed people

Paving at the cathedral and plans for a new bishop’s house

Concreting and paving works are progressing at an intensive pace at the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Majunga. At the same time, the purchase of the equipment and furniture needed for the church offices continues. This historic church was built in 1929 by Nikolaos the Cretan, with the important contribution of Greek emigrants who had settled in Madagascar. It is a precious legacy of the faith, piety and presence of Hellenism in the region, keeping its spiritual and historical value intact to this day. With the completion of the renovation and landscaping works, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas will take on a new look, worthy of its history and mission, offering a place of prayer, hospitality and spiritual rest for the clergy, the faithful and visitors. In addition, the start of construction of the new Bishop’s House on the right side of the church is planned shortly. This project will significantly strengthen the administrative, pastoral and missionary work of the Missionary Diocese of Majunga and North Madagascar, contributing to the further development of the local Church and of Orthodox witness in the region.

Glory to God for all things!

With special joy and deep gratitude to our all-good God and to the protector of our Missionary Diocese, Saint Nicholas, we announce that the renovation of our Metropolitan Church in Majunga is gradually being completed. Another important project is coming to an end, with the construction and paving of the outdoor areas of the courtyard, and with the completion of the new toilet facilities, which will better serve the needs of the flock and of our visitors.

This progress is the fruit of God’s blessing, the intercessions of Saint Nicholas and the love of all who support our missionary work.

What remains now is the construction of the offices of the Missionary Diocese of Majunga and North Madagascar and of the Bishop’s residence, works that will be built on the same site and whose construction is due to begin very soon.

We pray that the Lord may bless all who labour and give for the progress of our local Church and of the Orthodox Mission in North Madagascar, so that all the works may be completed to the glory of God and the spiritual benefit of His people.

Parish of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel – Antsiranana (Diego Suarez)

With special joy and deep emotion we announce to the devout Orthodox people of Antsiranana – Diego Suarez that a great wish and a long-standing request of the faithful of the area is being fulfilled. From today, the Parish of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel has a permanent priestly presence, so that the Divine Liturgy and all the sacred services can be celebrated regularly, for the spiritual strengthening and building up of the people of God.

All this is being done with the blessing of His Grace the Bishop and forms part of the wider missionary programme of the Missionary Diocese of Majunga and North Madagascar for the spread and organisation of parishes throughout the length and breadth of the local Church, so that Orthodox witness may reach even the most remote parts of North Madagascar.

In a spirit of obedience and ecclesiastical responsibility, Father Charalambos gladly accepted the Bishop’s decision and blessing to move to Antsiranana, taking on the ministry and spiritual guidance of this historic parish of the Archangels.

At the same time, the renovation and landscaping of the grounds of the Holy Church will gradually begin, with the aim of creating in the area a strong second spiritual and missionary centre in the northern part of our Diocese.

From today, then, the Orthodox Christians of Antsiranana have their own priest and a stable church presence close to them. And all of us feel great joy and gratitude, because the bells of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel will ring again in Diego Suarez, carrying a message of faith, hope and life to the blessed land of North Madagascar.

With special joy, the installation of a photovoltaic system has been completed at the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon in Sambava, North Madagascar, as part of the development and pastoral activities of the Missionary Diocese of Majunga and North Madagascar.

This project is an essential intervention to improve the daily life of the Christians of the area, as until now there was no access to electricity. With this new installation, the church and its grounds now have lighting and a power supply, serving the liturgical needs of the Church and creating safer and better conditions for the faithful.

At the same time, it is now possible to hold catechism gatherings, spiritual activities and meetings both inside the church and outside in the evening hours, for the spiritual benefit of young and old.

The presence of light in the holy place and in the church grounds is not only technical progress, but also a sign of hope, progress and strengthening of the missionary work of the Church in this blessed region of Africa.

Divine Liturgy at St Menas, Thessaloniki

With special joy and deep emotion, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, we celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the historic Holy Church of Saint Menas in Thessaloniki, at the kind invitation of the Missionary Association “Saint Kosmas the Aetolian”.

The attendance was movingly large and the joy of us all inexpressible, as the Grace of the Holy Spirit filled the congregation. In the sermon, we spoke about missionary work and the precious spiritual benefits each person receives when responding to the call of giving and service, especially towards our brothers and sisters who suffer in faraway parts of the world.

Then followed a talk at the premises of the Missionary Association, at which the great work of the Church, carried out with the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, was presented in more detail.

I feel the need to express from the depths of my heart my warm thanks to the Missionary Association “Saint Kosmas the Aetolian” for the honourable invitation and its practical love since the first steps of my missionary path; to the devout priests of the Holy Church of Saint Menas for their brotherly hospitality; and to His Eminence the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki for his fatherly love and his blessing.
